The Great Place Race: Apply by April 30th!

This month Moving Matters kicked off a new initiative called The Great Place Race. In collaboration with the Cook County Chamber of Commerce, The Great Place Race challenges our community to come up with ideas on how to make great places in Cook County and Grand Portage. It is a friendly, local competition for mini-grants of $250-$1,000 to use high impact, low cost ideas to create places that encourage people to slow down and spend time there. Watch the short video above for a fun overview of the Race.

The short, simple application is available online at www.becausemovingmatters.org/gpr or paper copies available at the Sawtooth Mountain Clinic front desk. Deadline for applications is Wednesday, April 30th. Projects need to be completed by July 31, 2014 and be put in place by the applicant. For more information, contact Maren Webb at 218-387-2330 x110 or movingmatters@boreal.org.

Stay tuned - we'll share the winning projects in next month's newsletter.

Moving Matters and Mr. Liechty's Exploratory Class

This school year, Moving Matters has been working with the 8th graders in Mr. Liechty’s Exploratory Class at Cook County High School. This collaboration started with bicycle/pedestrian counts in Grand Marais and has now grown into a quarter-long project looking at active transportation and community design. On April 3rd, the class braved the chilly spring day to collect traffic count data at three locations in Grand Marais. The busiest location during the two hour midday count was in front of the school and YMCA. But as one of the student counters noticed, the numbers were bumped up when a class from GES school walked to and from the YMCA during the count!

Building on their traffic count experiences, this past week the class took part in the ‘Planning Thru Play’ activity, building with doodads their response to the question “what does a walkable/bikeable community look like?” The class had great insights into what makes a place walkable and bikeable, such as having destinations, separation between cars and people walking/biking, lighting, public art, plants/flowers, and more. They also heard a presentation by landscape architect CJ Fernandez about his profession, community design, and several local planning projects. Students will be gathering data that will inform the redesign of the school’s parking lot and front entrance that will be done this summer.

Moving Matters is a project of the Sawtooth Mountain Clinic and many local partners. We strive to create safer and more accessible walking and biking routes for people of all ages and abilities throughout Cook County and Grand Portage. Funding for this project is provided by the Center for Prevention at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, as part of Blue Cross’ long-term commitment to tackling the four leading causes of heart disease and cancer: tobacco use, lack of physical activity and unhealthy eating.
