Look Out for New Great Places

Moving Matters and the Cook County Chamber of Commerce are pleased to announce the winners of the Great Place Race. Over 25 local businesses, nonprofits, and individuals submitted creative ideas from across Cook County and Grand Portage. $11,930 in grants have been awarded to 16 recipients to help create great places within our communities. Keep your eyes peeled this summer as you walk, bike, and drive throughout the county for the 2014 Great Place Race Recipient sticker. For more information, please visit our website and view the list of winners below.

Bike Events a Success in May

Each May we celebrate active lifestyles in Cook County with Move It in May. This year, Moving Matters helped bring some extra attention to bikes and making bicycling safe for all. Two classes were offered as well as the annual Bike Safety Rodeo. Thanks to all that joined us to learn more about biking this spring! We hope to offer more classes in the future based upon demand.

A special thank you to our instructors, Natalie Gille, Mark Spinler, and Jerry Hiniker, and all the volunteers that helped make these events possible! We also appreciate the support of the Angry Trout Cafe that hosted Bike Basics for Babes and the Cook County Community YMCA that hosted the Fix a Flat class.

When: One hour appointment between April 2014 and March 2015. Some will be asked to do a second visit.

Participants who complete either visit will receive $50 Visa gift card.

To register as a participant or for more information, call: Sawtooth Mountain Clinic 218-387-2330 or Grand Portage Health Service 218-475-2235, and ask for the FISH Coordinator.

Moving Matters is a project of the Sawtooth Mountain Clinic and many local partners. We strive to create safer and more accessible walking and biking routes for people of all ages and abilities throughout Cook County and Grand Portage.

Funding for this project is provided by the Center for Prevention at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, as part of Blue Cross’ long-term commitment to tackling the leading causes of heart disease and cancer: tobacco use, lack of physical activity and unhealthy eating.
